Recently, we were fortunate enough to enter into a partnership with ABC apiaries and acquired some beehives of our very own. On a staff field trip to Heritage Park to go visit our bees, our beekeeper was able to point out a baby bee that was just being born. Immediately after it emerged from it's nursery-like chamber, it went right to work doing the tasks that it was born to do.
Humans, however, are not bees. We aren't born to hit the ground running, nor can we perform the same mindless tasks over and over again without rest. We require downtime, time for quiet introspection and quality naval-gazing. Also, unlike our buzzing brethren, we need the constant stimulation of new experiences and influences to break up the monotony of the mundane.
It's with that in mind that we bring you this week's edition of Swizz ♥s, to introduce you to a thing or two to shake up your life. With no further ado, here are our new favourites.
American Horror Story: Hotel
For those of you who have been following this HBO original series, the wait is finally over. Another delightful season of your favourite scary stories is almost upon us. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, we're glad you're finally out of your coma and urge you to catch up on the first four seasons of the series that boasts the most star-studded cast with such veterans as Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Jessica Lange, and Neil Patrick Harris.
This season is set to be even more glamorous with a cameo from none other than Lady Gaga. Every season tells a different classic horror story and last season saw the always fabulous Jessica Lange perform a haunting rendition of a David Bowie cover. As the show is notoriously tight lipped about upcoming seasons, we have few clues of what to expect this season but from what we've seen so far, this should be another stellar season of this spooky series.
Good Luck Bar
Lately, the cool kids of Calgary have found a new hidden hangout. Located just around the corner from The Drum and Monkey, one can find a small metal door the is utterly unmarked, saved for a simple sign reading "Good Luck Bar". One quick trip up the stairs will find you in the final word in dive bars. Unmatching chairs, cramped quarters, and nothing on tap, Good Luck is the ultimate in unfussy. If you're thinking of attending a show at Good Luck, refer to the name if you're thinking of getting in at the door. With an official capacity of 46, pre-sale tickets are practically the only way to be counted amongst the honoured guests many nights. Pay a visit if you're looking for no-frills fun with a price point to match, cute bearded hipster boys, and girls who shall be referred to as Sun Dress Winter Scarf.
Normally, when people think of pastel colors, they think of translucent negligees and little old blue-haired ladies but these days all that has been changing. More and more, the popular choice amongst the fashionistas has been soft and muted shades of lilac, pink cotton candy and yes, even baby blue. Instead of going shopping for some Manic Panic, the twentysomethings are opting for a trip to their local salon to tint their tresses.
Courtney Barnett - Dead Fox
Hailing from down under, this dismal darling perfectly encapsulates the beauty and terror that is the modern world. Mixing shredding guitars and distortion with deep and astounding lyrics, every album listen is practically an existential crisis in its own right. Following up on her Double EP A Sea of Split Peas, this aussie rocker brings us her first full length LP, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.
